“Hermione just stole all of our shit” This Is The End.

The trailers for This Is The End had me hooked when I saw that some of my favourite comedy actors were all playing ‘themselves’ – an original concept I thought, lets see how these Hollywood A-listers cope with the apocalypse! Jay Baruchel visits Seth Rogan in LA, and they go to James Franco’s house warming party, the likes of Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Jason Segul, Danny McBride, Micheal Cera, Mindy Kaling, Emma Watson, Rihanna, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and a whole bunch of other celebs are there too. Baruchel feels out of place in the showbiz Hollywood hills though and whilst trying to steal some time alone with his buddy Seth, they witness the start of the apocalypse (which at first I thought was an alien invasion) – they run back to Franco’s house and the core guys, Rogan, Franco, Baruchel, Robinson and Hill are left to fight for survival once the ground swallows A LOT of famous faces.

The party scenes are brilliant – Micheal Cera is hilarious (although the “is it bad” line from the trailer wasn’t actually in the film) his embarrassment at having found his phone in his pocket had me in pieces while he dangled from a lamp post through his chest. Jonah’s relationship with Baruchel was one of the highlights for me – Hill is such a kiss ass and Baruchel thinks he is a complete tool. That dynamic with Rogan in between them was hysterical. I’m sure there was a lot of apologising after shooting because these guys get nasty and pretty personal! (ie. Rogan getting heckled that he plays the same character all the time, and that Green Hornet was basically a pile of crap – harsh but true!)

Franco’s borderline obsession with Rogan is so funny, and if your a fan of Pineapple Express as I am then you’ll love the references in here. When these two get together with McBride and Robinson its like a crazy re-union that I’d love to see actually happen with a sequel. I’d like to think that Franco isn’t as big a douche bag as he comes cross in this film, but it does make for some pretty hilarious banter between all the characters. (Especially his confession cam regarding McBride). I did however peg McBride in that category of complete arse-hole.

I really enjoyed the story as well the dynamic within the group of characters. Watson plays a great cameo as well as Channing Tatum, this guy just keeps growing on me! As well as the obvious disasters that can happen in the apocalypse there are some crazy shenanigans in the house where they have barricaded themselves in. I thought they may have took it too far with the Devil and Jonah Hill but actually they still kept it laugh out loud funny and not too crude it made me screw my nose up. It is essentially about Rogan and Baruchel’s friendship in the end and all of the characters admitting their mistakes, but with a fun, insane twist.

There isn’t too much depth in the story and other than reeling off all the funny moments there isn’t much to discuss about This Is The End. It is the biggest ensemble of famous faces I have seen (let’s not mention Movie 43), and the FUNNIEST film I have seen probably since Pineapple Express. I love their humour, although they could probably lay off the cock jokes – and the finale made me ecstatic! I came out the cinema with a giant grin on my face saying that was SO EFFING GOOD! I might even go and see it again – If you enjoyed the likes of Pineapple Express, I Love You Man, Hot Tub Time Machine, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny then you’re on to a winner with This Is The End.
