Jay and Silent Bob Get Old: Teabagging in Ireland.

I got the opportunity to take a look at the new DVD from Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes courtesy of The Digital Fix this week. Here is a little look at my review, to read the full article you can visit the site here.

“Filmmaker Kevin Smith and well-known friend Jason Mewes took their self-named SModcast to the stage in their first ever UK tour last year. Documented in ‘Jay & Silent Bob Get Old: Teabagging in the UK’, you can now watch further exploits in a new two-disc DVD featuring two live shows from Dublin plus an exclusive look at gigs in Las Vegas and San Diego.”

“Better known as their alter egos Jay and Silent Bob, Mewes and Smith grew up in New Jersey, a fact
which Smith is obviously proud of judging by the blue and orange jersey he sports in each show as well as the homages in his films. The pair met when they were young and have since starred in six films together starting in 1994 with Smith’s risky project Clerks, which became a big hit. Their journey isn’t strictly Hollywood though as the two friends have been through a lot together due to Mewes’ battle over the years with drug addiction.”

“The four live shows on this DVD are a spin-off from a long running podcast by Smith and his producer Scott Mosier which you can listen to for free online. At the time of writing (March 20th, 2013) they are up to their 106th episode. Seemingly the main aim of the weekly podcast is to help Mewes stay on the straight and narrow, an issue often brought up by the pair during the shows, each time declaring how many days sober he is up to. By the last show in Dublin Mewes is on 695 days sober, a huge achievement for someone that has fallen off the bandwagon several times in his life, including a stint of being addicted to the painkillers he was receiving for dental work – a story that is recounted in Dublin’s first show….”

“Overall the four shows which make up the Jay & Silent Bob Get Old: Teabagging in IrelandDVD would be much more entertaining had they perhaps been slightly better structured. The interesting stories are overpowered by the constant penis jokes and sex talk – and, with the exception of the physical comedy provided by Mewes and a touch of animation to accompany his long-winded stories, these shows would have just as much of an impact in podcast form.”
